DELHI:
Confirming for the first time that the French official detained for
rape in Bangalore, Pascal Mazurier, has a diplomatic status and hence
immunity from Indian laws, sources told TOI that the Indian government
now has no role in the matter. Mazurier is accused of raping his
3-year-old daughter. His wife Suja Jones had written to union home
minister P Chidambaram and foreign minister S M Krishna to ensure that
Mazurier is arrested and made to face trial in India.
"Even though he has only a service passport, he does enjoy diplomatic status and we have no role in the case now,'' said an Indian official. He will enjoy diplomatic immunity until the time the French government tries to revoke it. The wife of the accused must speak to the French government and ask them to intervene and provide her justice,'' added the official.
